ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) top leadership declared on Monday its intent to contest the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision rejecting the plea of Sunni Ittehad Council for reserved seats.
Addressing the Senate session, PTI Chairman Barrister Ali Zafar vehemently criticized the ECP ruling on the SIC’s plea asserting that the tenure of Chief Election Commissioner should not persist under such circumstances.
Zafar highlighted the party’s stance, citing Article 51, which stipulates the allocation of reserved seats based on the number of seats won. He accused the electoral watchdog of failing to adhere to this provision, alleging that its decision aimed to confuse PTI voters by withholding rightful allocations.
Ali Zafar Criticizes ECP
We had requested the ECP to decide on reserved seats before the Prime Ministerial election, Zafar said, adding that it has become evident that the electoral watchdog is neglecting its duties.
Reacting to the decision, PTI leader Shoaib Shaheen echoed Zafar’s sentiments, expressing intent to challenge the ECP ruling in court.
He said that the decision contradicts constitutional principles and legal frameworks.
The ECP decision regarding reserved seats is not only unconstitutional but also unlawful, Shaheen said.
He added that PTI will seek relief from the High Court and it reserved the right to appeal to the Supreme Court if necessary.
