ISLAMABAD: Senator Barrister Ali Zafar announced on Thursday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) would be writing a letter to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on behalf of its founder, Imran Khan, urging the cessation of financial assistance for Pakistan due to alleged “rigged elections.”
Speaking to the media in Rawalpindi alongside PTI leaders, Ali Zafar said that the country will only receive loans in accordance with the EU and IMF charters if there is sound governance. He said that countries lacking democratic processes risk being ineligible for support from reputable international organizations.
He said that transparent and fair elections are the cornerstone of democracy, but as the world witnessed, the people’s mandates were stolen in the dead of night, with results manipulated from pre- to post-election tampering.
He claimed that although candidates who were badly lost were declared the winners, those who won were overthrown overnight. Institutions such as the IMF will not provide money to Pakistan if the people’s mandate is not followed. Democracy cannot exist with stolen mandates.
In a bold stance against alleged election rigging, Senator Zafar called for an impartial inquiry, overseen by the Supreme Court of Pakistan, to restore faith in the electoral process. He urged swift action to rectify any discrepancies, urging the IMF to withhold financial assistance until the integrity of the electoral system is assured.
