KABUL: The Afghan Taliban have carried out their first public execution since the return to power in Afghanistan in 2021, a Taliban spokesman confirmed.

A Taliban spokesman said a man named Tajmir was executed at a crowded sports stadium in Farah province after he confessed to committing murder.

Dozens of Taliban leaders, including senior ministers in the Afghanistan government, attended the execution.

The execution came weeks after the Taliban government instructed judges to fully enforce Sharia law in the country.

Taliban supreme leader orders public execution

Haibatullah Akhundzada, supreme leader of the Taliban, issued the proclamation last month. He ordered judges to impose punishments, including stoning, executions, and amputations.

Taliban had promised to impose a softer version of the harsh law that characterized their earlier regime on the country from the year 1996 to 2001.

Taliban has already carried out many public floggings recently – including that of floggings of a dozen people before a crowded football stadium in Logar province of Afghanistan last month.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that the execution was attended by several Supreme Court judges, senior ministers, and military personnel.
