Punjab, K-P Govts Calls in Army to Maintain Law-and-Order

LAHORE: Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa governments have called in Pakistan Army to help the local administrations and police to maintain the law-and-order situation that has spiralled out of control in the two provinces as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf workers took the streets across major cities in protest against the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.

The Punjab Home Department said the army had been called in under Article 245 of the constitution to assist the local administration and police in maintaining the law-and-order situation.

Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said that those involved in attacks on government installations and security forces would be dealt with an iron hand. He vowed not to spare anyone going against state and law.

The provincial information minister said such incidents were equivalent to enmity with the state.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government said the army had been summoned under Article 245 of the constitution to assist the local administration and police.

Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazir Tarar has said that the law would take its course and legal matters should not be settled on roads, warning that nobody would be allowed to destroy public or private property.

Talking to the media, he said Imran Khan was arrested as per law by executing the arrest warrants issued by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
