LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Sunday announced plans to start a solar tube-well project for farmers across the province.

During a meeting with Provincial Minister for Irrigation, Kazim Pirzada, CM Maryam Nawaz underscored the significance of ensuring timely and adequate water supply to farmers across Punjab. The discussion focused on enhancing the efficiency of the Irrigation Department and fortifying water infrastructure to meet the agricultural needs of the province.

The chief minister said that the solar tube-well project will mark a significant stride towards sustainable agricultural practices, particularly in regions grappling with water shortages. Under the project’s ambit, 1200 waterways will be equipped with solar-powered tube-wells, with an initial investment of Rs 10 billion allocated for the endeavor. Subsequently, an additional 7,000 waterways will be covered in the second phase of the initiative, extending the benefits to farmers throughout Punjab.

CM Maryam Nawaz highlighted the project’s role in ensuring uninterrupted water supply to farmers, even in areas situated along the canal networks. The initiative will mitigate the adverse effects of water scarcity on agricultural yields.

Minister Kazim Pirzada reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of the provincial cabinet and administrative team, led by CM Maryam Nawaz, towards advancing the welfare of the public. He underscored the collective efforts to prioritize initiatives that address the pressing needs of farmers and foster sustainable agricultural development in Punjab.
