MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin commended the “balanced approach” of African countries toward the Ukraine conflict during formal talks with a delegation from seven African nations.

Putin expressed appreciation for the stance taken by African friends, emphasizing their role in seeking a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The high-level diplomatic team, which had visited Kyiv before arriving in Russia, aims to bring the perspective of a continent that has suffered from the repercussions of the Ukraine conflict, including the impact on grain prices.

Putin reiterated Russia’s willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with all parties interested in implementing peace based on principles of justice and respect for legitimate interests.

The visiting delegation comprises four presidents: Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, Macky Sall of Senegal, Hakainde Hichilema of Zambia, and Azali Assoumani, the current African Union leader, representing Comoros. However, the leaders of Uganda, Egypt, and Congo-Brazzaville were unable to attend and sent representatives instead.

Putin expressed Russia’s high regard for the position of African countries in supporting global stability and their pursuit of a pacifist policy. He stressed the respect and support Russia has for their efforts in maintaining peace.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, a member of the peace-seeking delegation, conveyed his message to Putin that the conflict in Ukraine must come to an end. Ramaphosa emphasized the need for negotiations and diplomatic means to resolve the war, stating that its continuation has negative implications not only for Africa but also for many countries worldwide.
