MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui at the Kremlin, following talks between the top diplomats of the two countries aimed at enhancing bilateral ties and cooperation.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, involved discussions on the outcomes of previous talks, building upon agreements reached by the heads of state during North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s visit to Russia last September.
During Kim Jong-un’s week-long visit, which included a trip to Russia’s Far East region, he met with President Putin, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, and other officials. The visit encompassed a tour of the Vostochny Cosmodrome, military and civilian aviation plants, as well as presentations on Russia’s nuclear-capable aircraft and hypersonic missiles.
This week’s discussions between Russian and North Korean diplomats focused on various aspects of cooperation, including culture, trade, and science. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized Moscow’s commitment to supporting lasting peace and stability in Northeast Asia. Lavrov expressed concern about the destabilizing impact of the United States’ policy on North Korea, emphasizing the need for the cessation of actions leading to increased tensions in the region.
Choe Son-hui’s visit to Russia occurs against the backdrop of renewed political strain on the Korean Peninsula, sparked by joint military exercises conducted by South Korea and the United States. North Korea denounced these drills, considering them a threat to its national security.
