MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a defiant speech on Thursday, cautioning that his nation’s nuclear forces remain “always” on high alert and emphasizing Russia’s intolerance toward any perceived threats from the West.
Speaking before thousands of soldiers adorned in ceremonial attire on Red Square, Putin commended the Russian army’s efforts in Ukraine and accused “Western elites” of inciting conflicts globally.
Addressing the Victory Day parade, commemorating the Soviet Union’s triumph over Nazi Germany in World War II, Putin stressed Russia’s current pivotal juncture, asserting that the nation’s destiny hangs on each individual’s actions. Framing the conflict with Ukraine as an existential battle against “Nazism,” Putin reiterated Russia’s commitment to preventing a global clash while maintaining readiness to defend against threats.
Notably, Russia recently intensified its nuclear rhetoric, with Putin ordering military drills involving nuclear weapons near Ukraine. Last year, Russia withdrew from the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty and a key arms reduction agreement with the United States, signaling a departure from previous disarmament efforts.
