KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: The Malaysian government’s firm support of a free Palestine and its condemnation of Israeli atrocities in Gaza will not deter US investors from doing business in Malaysia, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said on Tuesday.

He was responding to MPs who had expressed concern that the Madani government’s criticism of Western powers in response to the Israeli aggression on Gaza could have economic repercussions for their country. The prime minister reiterated Malaysia’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during last weekend’s Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Summit in San Francisco, the United States.

He said he had made a strong speech in front of US President Joe Biden and called out Western governments for practising what he dubbed as double standards.

Outside the Apec Summit, Anwar Ibrahim said his government had secured a total of RM63bn in proposed investments that are mainly from technology giants, which he cited as proof that US investment appetite in Malaysia remains high.

“We used the opportunity to hold multilateral meetings with many countries… and also met with several companies including Google, Enovix, Microsoft, TikTok and TPG and have managed to get a committed investment of RM63 billion,” PM Anwar said during the Prime Minister’s Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat Tuesday morning.

He said Malaysia’s political stability, a clear economic policy and ease in doing business supersede other factors in drawing US investments into Malaysia.
