Qatar Pledges Support for Pakistan’s Socio-Economic Sectors

ISLAMABAD: A high-level technical delegation of Qatar, led by Colonel Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah, met with Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change, on Thursday.

During their meeting at the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, they discussed bilateral interests including climate risk management, environmental conservation, water management, energy, forests, and disaster risk management.

Romina Khurshid Alam briefed the Qatari delegation on Pakistan’s efforts under Prime Minister Mian Shehbaz Sharif to enhance climate resilience and protect vulnerable communities.

She emphasized Pakistan’s challenges due to climate change, such as increasing temperatures, frequent floods, and intense heatwaves, which strain resources and infrastructure.

She highlighted Pakistan’s dependence on river systems for agriculture and water supply, noting climate impacts on water availability and quality. Romina Khurshid Alam also outlined the government’s initiatives in climate change mitigation, environmental conservation, water efficiency, energy conservation, tree planting, flood risk management, and heatwave response.

Colonel Ahmed Abdullah Al-Abdullah commended Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s initiatives in environmental conservation, climate risk management, disaster management, and various national programs.

He expressed Qatar’s awareness of Pakistan’s climate vulnerabilities and pledged support in socio-economic sectors like agriculture, water, energy, food security, health, and education.

The Qatari delegation committed to providing technical and non-technical support to help Pakistan achieve its climate change, environmental conservation, disaster risk management, and flood protection goals.

Romina Khurshid Alam thanked the delegation for their support in addressing these critical issues.
