MEXICO CITY: A 5.8-magnitude quake shook much of central Mexico on Thursday including the capital city, prompting citizens to run into the streets and roads, the country’s seismological institute stated. There were no early reports of damage in the city, a sprawling metropolis of 9 million citizens, Mayor Marti Batres posted on X.

The country’s President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was briefed by emergency officials and said later in a video message posted on social media, “apparently the earthquake was not that strong. In any matter we will provide more information as soon as possible.”

Mexico’s seismological institute said that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the central state of Puebla. Authorities in Puebla said the earthquake was felt in various towns but there were no reports of injuries or damage.

Mexico lies over 5 tectonic plates that make it one of the globe’s most quake vulnerable nations, especially on the Pacific coast. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake in 2017 had killed around 369 people, most of them in the capital city.

In 2022 central Mexico was also hit by another earthquake, just hours following millions of citizens had taken part in a mock quake safety exercise.
