GAZA STRIP: The world is moving forward with modern technology but people in war-hit Gaza are depending on battery-operated radio sets to keep themselves informed about the world and regional developments.

Power outgases have long been a part of everyday life of people in Gaza, but the besieged territory’s 2.4 million people are now facing long blackouts after Israel cut off electricity and fuel supplies.

According to the Hamas-run territory’s Health Ministry the relentless Israeli bombardment has killed more than 19,450 Gazans, mostly women and children.

Because of the current situation it is now impossible to use computers or television sets, recharge mobile phones or access the internet.

Stations such as BBC Arabic and Al Jazeera have started special channels to help keep displaced people up to date about latest news.

Radio in Gaza only way to find out what’s going on in world

As the phone and internet has been cut in the besieged area, radio is the only way to find out what’s going on. Though long battery life is another problem in the territory.

The retailers have increased the price of the radio sets because of their high demand. Earlier, when the radio sets were not available to the people of Gaza customers asked for old telephones with built-in radios and torches.

According to shopkeepers limited stock of radio sets is available in Gaza as only humanitarian aid is allowed to enter into the territory.

The UN has estimated that 1.9 million Palestinians have been displaced since the start of the war, around 85 percent of the population. Many of them are now living in shelters and makeshift camps in the south of Gaza without any basic supplies.
