LAHORE: Lahore received 315 millimetres of rain on Friday, breaking a 30-year-old record and leaving the provincial capital drenched in water.

According to Managing Director Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) Muhammad Ghufran the fresh spell of rain had broken a 30-year-old record as the Tajpura area received 315 mm of rain. He said last year, 291 mm of rain was recorded at the Lakshmi Chowk.

He added the WASA staff was active in the field and continuously monitoring the situation after the heavy downpour.

“The water has been removed from Lakshmi Chowk and other areas are also being cleared. Soon the city will be cleared of rainwater,” said the WASA MD.

It is pertinent to mention that the Met Office has predicted more rains in Lahore during the next 24 hours, which could further enhance the level of rainwater.

Rawalpindi and several other areas of the Punjab province also received heavy rainfall, causing problems for the residents.

Apart from Lahore, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi, Nikyal and Barnala areas of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Mandibahauddin, Jhelum, Sargodha, Pakpattan and their adjacent areas too experienced heavy rain.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif viewing the emergency situation has directed the local administration and Wasa authorities to take immediate measures to drain the rain in all the cities of the province including Lahore.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in its daily forecast on Friday said Karachi is expected to receive drizzle or light rain Friday evening or tonight.

According to the Met Office, the weather is likely to remain pleasant after the metropolis has faced a long spell of heatwave.
