PROVIDENCE: Rain stopped play during the T20 World Cup semi-final between India and England in Guyana on Thursday, with India at 65-2 off eight overs after losing the toss.

India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, continued his excellent form, scoring an unbeaten 37 off 26 balls, including six fours. Suryakumar Yadav was not out on 13 when the match was halted due to rain. The start of the game was already delayed by a pre-game downpour, affecting the conditions at Providence Stadium.

Rohit and Virat Kohli initially struggled to time their shots on a pitch much slower and lower than the one in St. Lucia, where Rohit had scored a blistering 92 against Australia. Kohli’s tough tournament continued as he was dismissed for nine. After pulling Reece Topley for six, Kohli was bowled two balls later, attempting a shot across the line, leaving India at 19-1 in the third over. Kohli has accumulated just 75 runs in seven innings during the tournament, averaging 10.71.

England, who had previously defeated India by 10 wickets in the 2022 semi-final in Adelaide, took another key wicket when Rishabh Pant was out for four, chipping a catch to midwicket off Sam Curran.

Rohit, showcasing his wide range of shots, hit two fours in three balls off leg-spinner Adil Rashid, utilizing both a reverse sweep and a conventional sweep.

The first semi-final on Wednesday in Trinidad saw South Africa thrash Afghanistan by nine wickets, with a reserve day allocated for rain interruptions. However, the India vs. England match, occurring during a traditionally wet season, has only 250 minutes of extra time to ensure a result. A minimum of 10 overs per side is required for a match result in the knockout stage.

If the game is washed out, India will advance to Saturday’s final in Barbados to face South Africa, having topped their Super Eights group.
