ISLAMABAD/NEW YORK: David Jolicoeur, a founding member of the ground-breaking hip-hop trio De La Soul, has died at the age of 54, according to the US media.
The rapper, known by the stage name Trugoy the Dove, died of unknown causes. The American musician recently spoke out about his congestive heart failure.
Jolicoeur was a founding member of the legendary trio, along with Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer) and Maseo (Vincent Lamont Mason Jr).
Founding member changed the face of hip-hop
The group was honored at last week’s Grammy Awards in Los Angeles during a tribute to the genre for changing the face of hip-hop in the late 1980s and early 1990s. B Real, a rapper with the hip-hop group Cypress Hill, described Jolicoeur as a “legend of hip-hop music and culture” on Twitter.
He wrote that his music would allow him to live in our hearts and minds, but he was a great human being and musician. He was very important to us. The group’s classic albums were made available for streaming online last month.
On March 3, De La Soul’s first six albums will be available for the first time on digital streaming services.
Their 1989 debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, debuted at number one on Billboard’s top R&B/hip-hop album chart and is frequently included on lists of the greatest albums of all time. It featured the singles The Magic Number and Me, Myself, and I.
