WASHINGTON: The US State Department said on Friday that the current government of Afghanistan’s recognition depends on the behaviour of the Taliban leadership towards women in their country.

State Department’s deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said in a media conference that if Taliban authorities do not respect females’ rights, they will not only make their country fall behind but also endanger the international legitimacy of Afghanistan.

He said that the US continued to have several tools to hold Taliban authorities accountable, as it relates to their treatment of women and girls, Not only the Taliban are holding Afghanistan’s future back, but they also continued to stand in the way of their stated desire for international legitimacy and acceptance.

Meanwhile, the UN also put conditions on the Taliban regime’s recognition to respect females’ and human rights as the United Nations ambassador to Afghanistan said, It will be “almost impossible” for the international community to recognize the Taliban regime as long as restrictions on girls and women are in place in Afghanistan.
