Rescuers Pull Five Survivors from Ruins in Quake Hit Turkey

ANKARA: In a significant development, at least five people were saved by rescuers on Tuesday from the ruins of quake-hit areas of Turkey, local media reported, 204 hours after the worst quake in the country’s history.

A man and woman were pulled out from the wreckage in the city of Hatay. Similarly, 18-year-old Muhammed Cafer was rescued from the ruins of a building in Turkey about 198 hours following last Monday’s quake, CNN Turk reported.

Earlier, rescuers pulled two brothers alive from the wreckage of an apartment block in Kahramanmaras province. According to Anadolu news agency, they were identified as  Muhammed Enes Yeninar and Baki Yeninar.

They were shifted to the hospital in an ambulance. However, their condition was unclear. Reports said that the combined death count in Syria and Turkey from Monday’s quake now exceeds 37,000.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that experts had termed the quake in Türkiye as an “exceptional natural phenomenon,.”

He added that “serious” destruction occurred in the ten provinces worst struck by earthquakes that shook the entire region on Monday.

The President confirmed that 35,418 people had passed away due to the quake. He further said that more than 13 million people had been affected by the worst earthquake in the region.
