GILGIT: A bus travelling from Rawalpindi to Gilgit was hit by a rockfall in the Lutar area of Upper Kohistan, tragically killing three passengers and injuring one, police and rescue officials confirmed on Monday. The bus was operated by Northern Areas Transport Corporation (NATCO), which offers daily services from Gilgit to Rawalpindi, Chilas, and Karachi.
As per the NATCO’s spokesperson, Ehsan Shah, the bus with the registration number GLTA 7303, was en route to Hunza from Rawalpindi on the Karakoram Highway when a massive rock struck the vehicle in the middle. “The rock neither fell on the front nor the back but directly on the middle of the bus, killing the passengers seated there,” Shah said.
The three passengers who lost their lives were from Gilgit, Ghizer, and Rawalpindi while the injured passenger resides in Rawalpindi. The injured and the deceased passengers were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ) Dassu, said Upper Kohistan Rescue officials in a statement.
