NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma, the triumphant captain who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, has been appointed to lead the Indian cricket team in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Monday.
Following India’s triumph over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma’s leadership, aiming for success in the upcoming ICC tournaments.
“I am confident that under the captaincy of Rohit, we will win the WTC Final and the Champions Trophy,” Shah stated.
Rohit Sharma took over the captaincy of the Indian team in 2021 after Virat Kohli stepped down. Since then, India reached the final of the WTC 2021-23 and the ODI World Cup 2023.
In a video message shared by the BCCI, Shah dedicated India’s recent World Cup victory to former head coach Rahul Dravid, as well as to Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, all of whom recently retired from T20Is.
“Many congratulations to Team India for this historic victory. This was our third final in the last year,” Shah remarked.
“In June 2023, we lost in the final of the World Test Championship. After ten wins in November 2023, we won hearts but couldn’t win the cup,” Shah continued.
“I had said in Rajkot that in June 2024, we will win hearts, win the cup, and hoist the flag of India, and our captain did just that. The last five overs had a huge contribution to this victory,” Shah added, praising the contributions of key players like Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Hardik Pandya.
Looking ahead, Shah expressed optimism about India’s prospects under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the upcoming WTC final and Champions Trophy.
“After this victory, the next stage is the WTC final and the Champions Trophy. I am confident that we will become champions in both these tournaments under the captaincy of Rohit,” Shah concluded.
