KYIV: Kyiv said on Wednesday that Moscow had launched numerous Iranian-designed attack drones towards Ukraine overnight from southern Russia and the annexed Crimean peninsula, in its latest aerial assault.
Ukrainian officials revealed concerns about Russia’s accumulation of drones and missiles, indicating a preparation for systematic attacks on Ukraine’s struggling energy grid throughout the winter.
The Ukrainian air force issued a statement confirming the launch of 48 Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs, with defensive systems successfully intercepting and downing 41 of these unmanned aerial vehicles.
Russian strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure the previous winter, which resulted in prolonged power outages and heating disruptions for millions, Kyiv has taken steps to fortify its air defence systems with support from Western weaponry. However, acknowledging the persisting threat, authorities admit the need for additional arms to safeguard vulnerable regions.
