MOSCOW: Russia, recognized globally as a major nuclear power, has started revisions to its nuclear doctrine, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Monday, citing an earlier statement by President Vladimir Putin.

“President Putin has said that work is underway to update the doctrine to align with current realities,” Peskov stated during a press briefing, refraining from providing further details on the nature or specifics of the revisions.

The announcement comes amid escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations, exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has precipitated the most significant standoff since the Cuban missile crisis of 1962.

A senior member of Russia’s parliament asserted on Sunday that Moscow might expedite the decision-making process outlined in its official nuclear policy, particularly in response to perceived escalating threats.

President Putin recently alluded to the possibility of updating Russia’s established nuclear doctrine, which outlines the conditions under which nuclear weapons may be deployed. The specifics of these potential changes have not been disclosed.

The geopolitical landscape has been profoundly impacted by Russia’s actions in Ukraine, where its military intervention since 2022 has drawn widespread condemnation and led to extensive sanctions from Western countries.

The United States and its allies have expressed deep concerns over any potential revisions to Russia’s nuclear strategy.
