MOSCOW: Russia claimed on Saturday it had intercepted and destroyed 47 Ukrainian drones over its southern regions overnight, mostly in the Rostov area bordering Ukraine.

The Russian army, operating air defense systems, reported the destruction of drones over various territories, including the Belgorod, Kursk, Volgograd, and Rostov regions. The Rostov region, in particular, witnessed the interception and destruction of 41 drones, highlighting the significant activity along the border area.

The southern Rostov region serves as a strategic hub for the Russian military to plan operations in Ukraine, and the recent drone attacks have targeted key locations, including the city of Taganrog on the Azov Sea. While a rescue worker was wounded in the attack, no fatalities were reported.

Russia Alleges Ukraine Targeted Aviation Plant

Social media channels affiliated with the Russian army alleged that Ukraine targeted the Beriev aviation plant in Taganrog, indicating a deliberate attack on critical infrastructure. Additionally, there were reports of another potential target being a military air base in the town of Morozovsk.

In the Kursk region, located further north and also bordering Ukraine, authorities reported damage to a clinic in the main city of Kursk. Regional governor Roman Starovoyt confirmed the incident, stating that patients had been evacuated from a nearby hospital and emphasizing that there were no casualties.

The city of Kursk, with a population of around 440,000 people, lies approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the Ukraine border, underscoring the proximity of the conflict zone to populated areas within Russia.
