MOSCOW: Russia on Wednesday strongly criticized Armenia’s rhetoric towards the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), describing it as ultimatum-driven and offensive.
Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, expressed alarm over the counterproductive nature of Armenia’s recent statements regarding the CSTO during a briefing. She emphasized that the prevailing rhetoric, characterized by ultimatums and at times offensive language, could potentially damage the allied relations between Russia and Armenia irreversibly.
Zakharova highlighted concerns about the rhetoric being imposed on Armenian society and warned of the consequences if Yerevan continues on this path. The Russian official’s remarks come in response to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s announcement of Armenia’s intention to withdraw from the CSTO if certain questions remain unanswered, stressing the organization’s obligation to fulfill its responsibilities.
Russia Opposes French Military Presence in Region
Furthermore, Zakharova criticized Yerevan’s apparent lack of awareness regarding the true intentions of its purported French supporters and the risks associated with increasing French military presence in the region. She dismissed Armenia’s belief that France could ensure its security, asserting that France’s actions are driven by geopolitical ambitions and anti-Russian sentiments rather than genuine concern for Armenia’s interests.
According to Zakharova, the current French authorities prioritize their own geopolitical agenda and view Armenia and the entire South Caucasus region as bargaining chips in their pursuit of maintaining their well-being and reputation. She accused France of using Armenia’s situation as a tool in its broader strategy, particularly in the context of ongoing tensions with Russia.
