MOSCOW: Russia on Friday condemned what it said were “completely unacceptable” Israeli strikes on Syria, after a war monitor said the latest air attack had killed over 40 people.

Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for Russia’s foreign ministry, emphasized the gravity of the situation, condemning the Israeli strikes as a flagrant violation of Syria’s sovereignty and international law.

“These aggressive actions against the Syria are categorically unacceptable,” stated Zakharova in a statement. She warned that such provocative acts of force could lead to a dangerous escalation in the already volatile zone of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israeli airstrikes in northern Syria resulted in the deaths of 36 soldiers and six Hezbollah fighters. The Israeli military, when contacted by AFP, declined to comment on the reports.

Israel has conducted several airstrikes in Syria since the outbreak of the civil war in 2011, targeting both Syrian army positions and militias, including Hezbollah.

The frequency of Israeli airstrikes in Syria has escalated since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Palestinian resistance group Hamas on October 7. Friday’s attack marked the second such assault within a 24-hour period.
