MOSCOW: Russia has attributed the escalation of tensions in Kosovo to Kosovo itself, as well as the United States (US) and the European Union (EU). The country expressed its concerns after violent clashes erupted between Kosovan police and protesters who opposed ethnic Albanian mayors.
The United States, along with its allies, criticized Kosovo for using force to install mayors in areas inhabited by ethnic Serbs, which has undermined efforts to improve relations with neighboring Serbia. NATO has urged Kosovo to de-escalate the situation.
Russia’s Condemnation
Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, strongly condemned the “provocative steps” taken by Pristina, which she claimed have brought the situation in Kosovo close to a critical phase and pose a direct threat to the security of the entire Balkans region.
Zakharova placed full responsibility for these developments on the United States and the European Union. Zakharova also criticized Western mediators for their delayed response in rebuking Kosovo.
Serbia’s Stance
The clashes in Kosovo prompted Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic to place the army on full combat alert and ordered units to move closer to the border.
Serbia, a traditional ally of Russia, does not recognize Kosovo’s independence, and Moscow has consistently blocked Kosovo’s bid for United Nations membership. Serbia still considers Kosovo as part of its territory.
The United States and the European Union have been actively involved in mediating the complex issues between Kosovo and Serbia, aiming to foster stability and improve relations in the region. However, Russia’s accusations highlight the deep divisions and differing perspectives regarding Kosovo’s status and sovereignty.
As tensions continue to rise in Kosovo, Russia has squarely blamed Kosovo, the United States, and the European Union for exacerbating the situation. The ongoing clashes between Kosovan police and protesters have sparked concerns in Serbia, leading to increased military readiness.
The complex issue of Kosovo’s independence remains a significant point of contention between different nations and continues to impact regional stability in the Balkans.
