KYIV, Ukraine: Russia launched several waves of drones on Kyiv in one of the largest attacks of its kind during the war, according to Kyiv’s military administration on Wednesday. The attack kept the Ukrainian capital under air raid alerts nearly all night.

Ukraine’s air defence systems successfully destroyed more than 30 drones by 6:30 a.m. (0330 GMT) on Wednesday, marking the seventh attack on Kyiv in July, said Serhiy Popko, head of the city’s military administration.

Popko described it as “one of the most massive attacks on Ukraine with attack drones during the entire war” on the Telegram messaging app. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Kyiv.

While the full scale of the attack remains unclear, Russian state news agencies claimed the attacks targeted several military airports and warehouses across Ukraine. Reuters could not independently verify these reports.

Kyiv and most of central and eastern Ukraine were under air raid alerts on Tuesday. Air defence systems were active around Kyiv and its surrounding region throughout the night, according to Popko.

Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on Telegram that the city was attacked from several directions. Reuters witnesses heard blasts multiple times during the night, consistent with air defence systems repelling the attack.
