MOSCOW: The Kremlin has issued a warning regarding a potential provocation at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, stating that the threat of sabotage from the Kyiv regime is alarmingly high.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized the possibility of catastrophic consequences stemming from such sabotage during a press conference today.

Tensions have been mounting between Russia and Ukraine, with the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant serving as a focal point of concern in the ongoing conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently raised concerns to his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, claiming that Russia was planning dangerous provocations at the plant, which is the largest in Europe.

Russia and Ukraine Hurl Accusations

Both Russia and Ukraine have previously accused each other of endangering the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant since Russia’s large-scale hostilities began in Ukraine in February of last year. Peskov referenced a recent incident at the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, which resulted in devastating consequences, as an example of the Kyiv regime’s alleged readiness to resort to extreme measures.

In response to the potential threat, Peskov stated that all necessary measures were being taken to counter it. Renat Karchaa, an advisor to Russia’s Rosatom nuclear agency, further claimed earlier this week that Kyiv was planning an attack on the plant, specifically targeting the night of July 5.

To monitor the situation closely, the United Nations’ nuclear energy agency has deployed a team of observers to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. Rafael Grossi, the head of the agency, confirmed on Tuesday that there were currently no plans to redeploy the group.
