KYIV, Ukraine: A Russian air attack on Kyiv damaged buildings, roads, and several power lines in the city, the capital’s military administration reported early on Sunday. This occurred after the military indicated that air defenses were attempting to repel a drone attack.
Reuters report that there were no reported injuries in the attack, which came in waves and approached the city from different directions, according to Serhiy Popko, the head of the Kyiv military administration, who shared updates via the Telegram messaging app. Popko initially mentioned a fire but later clarified that emergency crews had not been dispatched to respond to a fire in the Shevchenkivskyi district, which was earlier attributed to the attack.
This drone strike marked Russia’s second attack on Kyiv in as many nights. Preliminary reports indicated that all of the attack drones were destroyed; however, it remains unclear how many drones were launched at Kyiv.
Falling debris from the drones damaged entrances and windows of at least five buildings in the Shevchenkivskyi and Holosiivskyi districts, which included a hostel and an office building. The military shared several photos on Telegram showing a blown-out entrance to a building, damaged windows, and power lines lying on the road.
Witnesses in Kyiv report hearing blasts and seeing smoke rising from above the residential buildings. The Shevchenkivskyi district, located near the center of Kyiv, is a busy area with universities, restaurants, and tourist attractions. Meanwhile, the Holosiivskyi district is home to a large national park. Both districts are on western bank of the River Dnipro.
Throughout the night, Kyiv, its surrounding region, and most of the eastern half of Ukraine were under intermittent air raid alerts, as reported by the Ukrainian military on social media.
