MOSCOW: Russian forces said on Monday that control of Bilogorivka, a Ukrainian village in the eastern Lugansk region captured by them, is still with Kyiv. Lugansk, one of the regions Russia claimed to have annexed in 2022, has been a strategic focus for the Kremlin.
According to the Russian defense ministry, the Southern grouping of troops successfully liberated Bilogorivka after intense combat operations. Before the conflict, the village had a population of approximately 800 people and stood as a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the Lugansk region. It had been retaken by Kyiv’s forces in 2022.
The Ukrainian army is currently facing significant challenges, including a recent Russian offensive in the Kharkiv region and severe ammunition shortages along the front lines. Moscow said that it has made substantial gains in the past week.
