KYIV, Ukraine: A Russian strike on Thursday killed two French volunteer aid workers in the southern Ukrainian region of Kherson, the regional governor and other officials said.

Kherson Governor Oleksandr Prokudin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said the Russian attack on the city of Beryslav killed two French citizens and wounded three other foreigners.

Prosecutors in the region said Russian forces launched a mass drone strike in the area around 4 p.m. Police said a Ukrainian citizen was also injured.

The media could not independently verify the details of the incident, but Russian forces are involved in frequent shelling of parts of the Kherson region now held by Ukraine.

Beryslav is located on the west bank of the Dnieper River in the Kherson region, which Russian forces left in late 2022.

Ukrainian troops have since established positions on the eastern bank, but Russian forces continue to shell other parts of the Kherson region heavily from areas they hold on the eastern side.
