Russia’s Defence Minister Arrives in North Korea

MOSCOW: Russia’s Minister for Defence Sergei Shoigu arrived in North Korea Tuesday to attend the 70th-anniversary celebrations of the armistice that ended the 1950-1953 Korean War, the Russian Ministry for Defence said.

“The Russian delegation led by the Minister of Defence Sergei Shoigu arrived in North Korea, the Ministry said.

It maintained that the Russian minister was welcomed at the airport by North Korea’s Defence Minister Kang Sun Nam, it maintained.

In an earlier, statement, the Russian Defence Ministry said that the trip would contribute to consolidating Russian-North Korean military relations and would be an important step in expanding cooperation between the two nations. Russia is among a few countries that maintain friendly relations with North Korea, and its leader Kim Jong Un has shown support for Russia during the Ukraine war.

Earlier, media reported that a Chinese delegation would also event in North Korea.  China also confirmed that its high-level delegation led by Politburo member Li Hongzhong would visit North Korea.

A large-scale army parade and other events will likely be held this week, with satellite photos indicating that soldiers and civilians have been preparing for the parade for months.
