MOSCOW: Russia’s space agency Roscosmos has announced that the Luna-25 spacecraft has adjusted its orbit to attempt the first landing near the moon’s south pole.

Roscosmos, in a statement, said the spacecraft performed an orbit mission for 40 seconds with an objective to provide the best conditions for the subsequent construction of a pre-landing orbit.

It said the adjustment went normally, and all the spacecraft’s communication systems are functioning without any problem.

Last week Russian space chief Yuri Borisov said Luna-25 is expected to land on the moon on August 21.

The spacecraft will stay on the Moon for a year and will, take samples of the moon soil, and carry out long-term scientific research.

This is the first lunar mission in post-Soviet Russia. The last mission took place in 1976 when the USSR was a leader in space technology.

The mission is important for the Russian space sector to demonstrate its capabilities in sending space missions.
