SEOUL, South Korea: South Korea’s unification ministry has declared its commitment to deterring North Korea’s nuclear development through a resolute response in collaboration with the United States and Japan. The approach also includes applying sanctions and pressure on the North Korean regime with support from the international community.

This statement was issued on Thursday in response to North Korea’s rubber-stamp parliament’s adoption of a constitutional amendment during a two-day meeting that concluded on Wednesday. The amendment enshrines North Korea’s policy on nuclear force in its constitution.

The Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea unanimously adopted the revision, which emphasizes the advancement of nuclear weapons to safeguard the country’s right to exist and grow while deterring war and preserving regional and global peace.

South Korea’s unification ministry interprets this move as a clear indication that Pyongyang has no intention of relinquishing its nuclear arsenal and is determined to enhance its nuclear capabilities.

North Korea initially included its nuclear possession in its constitution in 2012 and passed a nuclear law last year authorizing the preemptive use of nuclear weapons.

The ministry reiterated its stance that any nuclear use by North Korea would result in the end of the regime, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the need for international cooperation to address it effectively.
