SEOUL: The South Korean defense ministry has warned that North Korea could face the end of its regime if it tries to use nuclear weapons, after Pyongyang recently amended its constitution to protect its nuclear policy.

The ministry issued the warning following the North held a key parliamentary meeting last week, led by its leader Kim Jong-un to strengthen its nuclear force through constitutional amendment.

The ministry in a statement said that the military of South Korea is well equipped with a combined South Korea-U.S. resolve that can overwhelmingly respond to any attack from North Korea.

It said if North Korea tries to use nukes, it will face the end of its regime.

The ministry also said the North is making efforts to develop its nuclear capabilities at the cost of the livelihoods of its people who are facing poverty and instability.

It added that N. Korea designs pose a grave threat to world peace and stability, including on the Korean Peninsula. It is strongly believed that such moves would further isolate N. Korea from the international community.

The North Korea latest move came after it formulated a new nuclear law in September last year that allowed the preemptive use of nuclear arms, terming its status as a nuclear state irreversible.

South Korea has already made such warnings to North Korea, with President Yoon Suk Yeol saying the N. Korean government will be ended by the South Korea-U.S. alliance if it uses nuclear weapons during an Armed Forces Day ceremony last month.
