Saqlain Mushtaq Joins New Zealand as Assistant Coach

ISLAMABAD: Former off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq is all set to join the New Zealand Cricket Team as an Assistant Coach for the upcoming limited-overs series between the Black Caps and Pakistan.

While talking to a news channel, the former spin maestro confirmed the new assignment and said that he had accepted the role for a brief period after New Zealand Cricket approached him, adding that he would only work with the team during their stay in Pakistan.

Saqlain will work with the Kewis during the ODI and T20I series against Pakistan, scheduled to be played from April to May, comprising five ODIs and as many T20Is.

Recently Saqlain served as head coach of the Pakistan team till the expiry of his contract in February this year.

The development comes as the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to appoint a new coaching staff led by Mickey Arthur, who will work as a consultant.

Mickey Arthur has previously served as head coach of the Pakistan team for about three years, witnessing a major achievement by Pakistan woning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2017 during his tenure.

It is worth noting here that the schedule for the series between New Zealand and Pakistan was revised recently due to election issues in Punjab.

The ODIs will help Pakistan to have preparations for the Asia Cup and ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup schedule in 2023, while the T20I will help the PCB to have better preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, which will be held in the USA and West Indies in June/July the same year
