LONDON: The former wife of UK’s Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson has been diagnosed with skin cancer, said her spokesman on Sunday.

The spokesman in a statement said that after her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this year, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma.

The cancer was discovered after she underwent tests advised by a dermatologist shortly before she was due to undergo a surgery related to her breast cancer.

The 64-year-old, Ferguson, expressed gratitude to the medical team supporting her. She had several moles on her body which were removed and analyzed and one of which was cancerous.

According to the spokesperson the doctors are performing further tests to determine the stage of the cancer.

He said that despite the diagnoses the Duchess remains in good spirits.

The spokesman added Sarah Ferguson believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, color and texture of new moles that can be a sign of cancer.

Though Ferguson is no longer a working royal, the news comes at a time when the royal family has been rocked by health problems.

King Charles will undergo prostate surgery next week, forcing him to postpone public engagements.

While at the same time, his daughter-in-law Catherine, Princess of Wales, 42, is still in the hospital after abdominal surgery.
