RIYADH:  Saudi Arabia’s Cabinet has emphasised that Syria must be free from terrorism and any aggression against its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The cabinet in its meeting on Tuesday discussed the current regional and international developments, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud chaired the Cabinet session in Riyadh.

Minister of Media Salman Al-Dossary, in a statement to the Saudi Press Agency following the meeting, said the  Cabinet commended the broad international participation in the recent ministerial meetings on Syria hosted by Saudi Arabia, which aim to support the Syrian people through humanitarian and economic assistance and to help them rebuild Syria as a unified, independent, and secure nation for all its citizens.

The Riyadh meeting on Syria was attended by representatives of a number of countries from the Middle East and beyond, including Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Turkiye, as well as the UK and US. Officials from the GCC, EU and UN also took part.

The Cabinet emphasised that Syria must be free from terrorism and any aggression against its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The meeting reiterated Saudi Arabia’s call upon the international community to fulfill its responsibility in stopping Israel’s ongoing violations of international law and norms.

The Saudi Cabinet stressed the significance of respecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity to prevent further escalation of regional crises and to support efforts toward achieving a just and comprehensive peace.

The meeting also reviewed Saudi Arabia’s ongoing international development and humanitarian relief efforts, which aim to end the suffering of those in need worldwide.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Sunday called for the lifting of sanctions on Syria, saying the curbs hindered the country’s rebuilding and development. He made the call at a press briefing after high-level meetings on Syria in Riyadh.

“We stressed the importance of lifting unilateral and international sanctions imposed on Syria, as their continuation hinders the aspirations of the Syrian people to achieve development and reconstruction,” Prince Faisal said.
