RIYADH, Saudi Arabia: The Saudi deputy foreign minister reaffirmed the Kingdom’s support for a ceasefire in Sudan, as outlined in last year’s Jeddah Declaration, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.

Waleed Al-Khuraiji met with Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan, in Port Sudan.

During the meeting, Al-Khuraiji reiterated Saudi Arabia’s support for UN and international efforts aimed at achieving peace in Sudan and enhancing humanitarian efforts to alleviate the suffering of the Sudanese people. He also conveyed greetings from the Saudi leadership and emphasized the Kingdom’s commitment to restoring security and stability in Sudan.

The reaffirmation comes against the backdrop of a prolonged conflict in Sudan that began in April 2023, when clashes erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The power struggle between the two factions has resulted in widespread violence, leading to significant civilian casualties and displacement. The conflict has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation in Sudan, with millions facing food insecurity and limited access to essential services.

The Jeddah Declaration, signed in 2022, aimed to pave the way for a ceasefire and a political solution to Sudan’s conflicts. However, the ongoing hostilities have hindered the implementation of the agreement. Saudi Arabia’s renewed call for a ceasefire highlights the Kingdom’s active role in regional diplomacy and its commitment to supporting peace and stability in neighboring countries.

The international community continues to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan, with a focus on protecting civilians and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Saudi Arabia’s involvement underscores the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the complex challenges facing Sudan and supporting its path towards peace and stability.
