RIYADH: A diplomatic delegation of Saudi Arabia arrived in Tehran on Saturday in order to discuss the reopening of its embassies following a seven-year absence, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s (KSA) foreign ministry said.
Saudi Diplomatic Delegation Visits Tehran
The trip follows an extraordinary meeting between the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran in Beijing this week following they agreed last month to resume diplomatic relations.
Today’s visit is part of “implementing the tripartite deal” reached on March 10 between the two regional countries, brokered by Beijing, to restore ties ruptured in 2016, the Kingdom foreign ministry said, cited by the official Saudi Press Agency.
The two longtime rivals have now promised to work together. Saudi Minister for Foreign Affairs Prince Faisal bin Farhan and his Iranian counterpart Amir-Abdollahian held meeting in China on Thursday and expressed resolve to bring “stability” to the region.
According to SPA, a “technical delegation” of Saudi Arabia held meeting with Iran’s chief of protocol in Tehran.
The two sides severed relations following protesters in Iran attacked Saudi diplomatic missions after Riyadh’s execution of a prominent cleric.
Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi has also been invited by Saudi King Salman to Saudi Arabia, a trip planned to take place following the holy month of Ramadan.
