RIYADH: The Saudi Highway Code has set unified standards for wildlife and camel crossings to enhance road safety, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Thursday.

These standards are part of efforts to improve the quality of life and ensure road safety.  According to the General Authority for Roads (GAE) the code specifies technical requirements for designing crossings, such as providing natural light in underpasses, ensuring they are wide enough, and using fencing to guide animals. It also makes protection for animals in overpasses mandatory.

The GAE is responsible for regulating and supervising the roads sector. The code will become mandatory for government entities by early next year and for private entities in the middle of the year. It is aimed to achieve strategic objectives for safety and quality with the goal of reaching a global ranking of sixth in road quality by 2030.
