RIYADH: King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia on Wednesday sent cables of condolences and sympathy to Japan’s Emperor Naruhito following a powerful earthquake that killed at least 62 people in his country on Monday, Saudi Press Agency reported.

According to SPA, the cables also sent condolences and sympathy to the families of the deceased and wished the wounded a speedy recovery.

The 7.5 magnitude strong earthquake on January 1 that rattled Ishikawa prefecture on the main island of Honshu triggered tsunami waves more than a meter high, caused a major fire, and tore apart roads.

The toll was expected to climb as Japanese rescuers scrambled to search for survivors on Wednesday as authorities warned of landslides and heavy rain hampering the efforts.
