RIYADH: Saudi Arabia’s railway sector is experiencing a period of remarkable expansion, surpassing expectations for both passengers and cargo transport in the first quarter of 2024, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Monday.
Official data reveals a remarkable 28% increase in ridership compared to Q1 2023, with over 8.7 million passengers utilizing rail services during this period. This surge is credited to heightened activity in both intercity and intracity travel.
Intercity travel witnessed a significant gain, with passenger numbers surpassing 2.7 million, highlighting the growing preference and convenience of long-distance train journeys. Meanwhile, intracity services experienced substantial demand, ferrying around 5.9 million passengers to urban areas.
The positive trajectory extends to the cargo sector, with over 6.3 million tons of metals and goods transported by rail in Q1 2024, marking a significant 9% year-on-year increase.
This growth underscores the escalating significance of railways in Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure.
Beyond providing a comfortable and efficient travel alternative, rail transport offers a multitude of advantages. The network serves as a vital lifeline for industry, facilitating the movement of goods and bolstering the seamless operation of various sectors.
Moreover, railways play a pivotal role in environmental sustainability by curbing reliance on road transportation and reducing carbon emissions.
