Saudi Surgeons, Doctors Separate Syrian Conjoined twins in 7-hour Operation

RIYADH: A team of Saudi surgeons and doctors on Thursday successfully separated Syrian conjoined twins during a seven-hour surgery at the King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital in Riyadh, Arab media reported.

Ihsan and Bassam, who are 32 months old, were said to be in a stable condition after the complicated surgery.

The complicated surgery carried out in five stages and 26 professionals including, specialists, consultant, nursing, technical, and support staff took part in the medial operation.

The operation was led by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, General supervisor of KSrelief as per the directives of Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman.

After the surgery, the twins were shifted to a children’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where they will remain under monitoring and supervision.

Arab News reported that the parents of the kids, thanked King Salman, the Crown Prince, and Saudi medial team for their support.

The father of the kids, Mahmud Salih lauded the procedure of the operation and thanked to Saudi aid agency for supporting his family and kids.

Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah appreciated the excellent medical staff and facilities at King Abdullah hospital. He said that it was a very tough surgery but they had no other option but to conduct the operation to separate the twins.

It was the 58th surgery to separate conjoined twins conducted under the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) program which has supervised as many as 130 cases from 23 nations since 1990.

Dr. Al-Rabeeah said: “Saudi Arabia had invested in its cadres, its people, and every person has obtained a distinguished education in the top universities worldwide”.

He added, “Now they are returning to prove that cadres of Saudi Arabia are representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and one such example is the KSA program for the separation of conjoined twins.”

The twins and their parents came from Ankara to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on May 22.

Salih appreciated the hospitability of the Kingdom and said they were warmly received here.
