SC Verdict: PM Summons Ruling Parties to Discuss Political Situation

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has called a meeting of the parliamentary leaders of the ruling parties today (Wednesday) at the PM house to discuss the political situation.

 

The premier summoned the meeting of parliamentary leaders of the coalition partiesto discuss the political situation in the country in the wake of the Supreme Court’s verdict in the elections delay case. The sources said that the coalition parties will mull over a strategy so as to highlight the government’s stance in the parliament.

 

SC verdict

 

The apex court on Tuesday declared the Election Commission of Pakistan’s March 22 notification on Punjab elections null and void and set May 14 as the new date for polls to the Punjab Assembly.

 

A three-member bench — comprising Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijazul Ahsan and Justice Munib Akhtar — announced the reserved judgment on the PTI’s petition challenging the ECP’s order postponing the elections in Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

 

The SC declared the Election Commission’s order postponing the Punjab Assembly polls until October 8 as “unconstitutional” and ordered the Shehbaz-led federal government to release Rs21 billions for elections in Punjab by April 10.
