LAHORE: As Pakistan braces for scorching temperatures and erratic weather patterns, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an alert of heatwaves, rains, and storms expected throughout the month. The alert comes in the wake of searing temperatures gripping the nation, prompting proactive measures to safeguard public health and well-being.

The Punjab government announced the reduction of school hours for all public and private schools from May 18 to May 31.

Under the revised schedule, schools will open from 7 am to 11:30 am on weekdays and Saturdays, and from 7 am to 10 am on Fridays. The adjustment aims to minimize exposure to the blistering afternoon heat, ensuring the well-being of students and staff.

Additionally, precautionary measures have been ensured for school heads to adhere to, including the maintenance of operational fans, provision of cold water facilities, and prohibition of outdoor activities during peak sun hours. Chief executive officers and institutional heads have been urged to enforce these directives rigorously.

Punjab Minister for School Education, Rana Sikandar Hayat, underscored the imperative for climate-conscious action, emphasizing collective responsibility in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change. Meanwhile, authorities have announced early commencement of summer vacations, from June 1 to August 14.

Meanwhile, a wildfire erupted in the picturesque Margalla Hills National Park, exacerbated by intense heat and gusty winds that fueled the blaze across a sprawling expanse of the Loi Dundee area in the federal capital.

According to the PDMA spokesperson, Punjab is poised for a heatwave from May 21 to 27, with dusty winds and thundershowers forecasted across the province until May 18. A cascade of rain coupled with strong winds is expected in several districts, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, and Sargodha, among others.

Temperatures are expected to soar an average of 8 degrees Celsius above normal levels, amplifying the risk of heat-related ailments amidst prevailing dry conditions. In response to the impending weather extremities, district administrations have been mobilized to heighten preparedness and mitigate potential risks.

In accordance with directives from the Chief Minister of Punjab, proactive measures have been taken to safeguard vulnerable populations, particularly students and educational staff.
