TEL AVIV: Tens of thousands of Israeli people took to the street in various cities across the country on Saturday, protesting against judicial overhaul plans by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
Critics say measures introduced by the new government would grant more power to politicians, weaken the Supreme Court, and limit judicial oversight. Protesters say that the legislation would undermine democracy.
Israel Government set to introduce legislation
The rift over the power of courts is deepening in Israel as the government is set to introduce some of the legislation in parliament Monday amid calls for partial strikes by businesses and professional groups.
For the sixth week, protesters pressed on with large rallies, with the main one in the central city of Tel Aviv and several smaller gatherings in other cities.
