MEXICO CITY, Mexico: Authorities are investigating what appears to be a secret mass grave and crematorium in southeast Mexico City, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The authority said it had opened an investigation and sent a forensic expert to the scene, where police are interviewing witnesses and gathering information from security cameras.

Cecilia Flores, who leads the Searching Mothers group in the state of Sonora, announced the discovery of the remains buried in an empty lot on social media on Tuesday, which is relatively rare in Mexico’s capital.

Flores said the group also found photos and identification belonging to various people believed to be likely victims.

However, as of midday Wednesday, a woman and a child were found alive with some documents belonging to them, the former lost his ID in the robbery and the child left his in a book that was thrown away.

The site, according to the search party, was located on the border between Iztapalapa and Tlahuac, two crowded neighborhoods in the capital with high rates of poverty and gang crime.

More than 100,000 people have been missing in Mexico, most since 2006, when the government of then-President Felipe Calderon deployed the military to fight drug cartels.
