PESHAWAR:  The Provincial Election Commission has postponed Senate Elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, local media reported on Tuesday. The opposition parties in the KP Assembly had filed a petition in Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) seeking postponement of the Senate elections.

The development took place as polling for elections on vacant Senate seats is underway at the National Assembly, Sindh and Punjab. At least 59 candidates are taking part in the senate elections. However, the situation about voting in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly was unclear due to a stand-off between the provincial government and opposition parties over the oath-taking of MPAs-elect on the reserved seats.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has completed all arrangements for the Senate polls scheduled for today. Polling is underway in the National Assembly and provincial assemblies of including Punjab, and Sindh.

Ballot papers in 4 different colors have been printed for the Senate polls. White papers will be used for general seats, pink for women, green for technocrat seats, and yellow for minority seats.

Moreover, the transportation of election materials to returning officers has been completed. Returning officers have already issued the final list of the candidates.

The ECP said that a total of 147 candidates submitted their nomination papers for the vacant seats. Out of these, eighteen have been elected unopposed out of which 7 are from Punjab’s general seats.

In Balochistan, senators for 7 general seats, 2 women seats, and two Ulema/technocrat seats have been elected unopposed. On the other hand, the situation about voting in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly is unclear due to a stand-off between the provincial government and opposition parties over the oath-taking of MPAs-elect on the reserved seats.
