ISLAMABAD: The Senate on Tuesday unanimously approved the first-ever Parliamentary Caucus on water resources after Senator Saadia Abbasi of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) moved the motion before the House.

The Senate convened in his 334th meeting under the leadership of Chairman Senate, Sadiq Sanjrani.

In presenting her proposal, Senator Abbasi referenced Rule 204 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Senate, 2012. According to this rule, the Senate has the authority to empower the Chairman Senate to form a Parliamentary Caucus on Water Resources in the country, comprising members of the Senate of Pakistan and the Minister for Water Resources as an ex-officio member.

Given the absence of a National Assembly and the exclusive presence of the Senate in the Parliament, Senator Abbasi emphasised the importance of soliciting nominations for the Caucus from the Senate. She further proposed that the Chairman Senate be granted the authority to nominate members to the Caucus and make necessary adjustments to its composition.

Additionally, she highlighted that the Senate Secretariat would extend secretarial support to the newly formed caucus.

Following Senator Abbasi’s statement, the Chairman Senate conducted a poll to gauge the support and opposition to the motion. The outcome reflected a consensus within the House, resulting in the successful approval of the motion.  —APP
