A local court in Islamabad on Thursday sent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Senator Azam Swati on a two-day physical remand.

Senator Azam Khan Swati was produced in the court of Civil Judge Shabbir Bhatti after he was arrested by the Crime Investigation Agency (FIA) Cybercrime Wing over his controversial tweets.

The FIA sought a seven-day physical remand of Azam Swati, however, the court granted a two-day physical remand.

The court also directed the FIA to carry out a medical checkup of Azam Swati.

Azam Swati told the judge that he was badly tortured during custody.

The FIA’s cybercrime wing had registered a case against Senator Swati earlier for his controversial tweets including the one in which he had criticized Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa after the acquittal of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in a money laundering case.

In one of his tweets, PTI Senator Swati said: “Mr Bajwa congratulations to you and few with you. Your plan is really working and all criminals are getting free at cost of this country. With these thugs getting free, you have legitimised corruption. How do you predict now the future of this country?”

It should be noted that the PTI social media brigade and its leaders continue to run smear campaigning on social media often targeting their adversaries and the army’s top brass for what they claim is the removal of Imran Khan’s government through alleged conspiracy and with the support of foreign forces.

Earlier, a special central court in Lahore acquitted Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son and former Punjab chief minister Hamza Shehbaz in the Rs16 billion money laundering case.

Meanwhile, PTI leader Azad Umar in a tweet condemned the arrest of Azam Swati.

Earlier, the FIA arrested PTI leaders Saifullah Khan Niazi and Hamid Zaman in the prohibited funding case.

According to the FIR registered against Azam Swati,  “the PTI leader through his tweets made a conscious effort to  spread hatred among the people against the army chief and  army jawan.”
